Web Design Choice of Fixed Width vs Liquid Layouts

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

If you have worked long enough for your web design company, or if you have tried designing a site on your own, you should already know by now that there are two kinds of web page layouts that you can choose from. Fixed width layouts are those wherein the width of the entire web page is set at a specific value, while liquid layouts are those wherein the width is flexible depending on how wide the online visitor’s browser is. Choosing between these two layout methods can be a little difficult for a web designer, as each has its own benefits and deficiencies. Let us look through each and discover everything you need to know for you to make the right choice.

Fixed width layouts allow you to start with a specific size that you set. This allows you better and direct control so that you know how your page will look like, at least most of the time. They work best if you work with print backgrounds, as they allow for minute adjustments in the layout without inconsistencies across browsers and operating systems. On the other hand, with a liquid layout, you base the layout on a percentage of the browser’s current window size. Liquid layouts allows for an efficient use of space given by any browser window or screen resolution. They are often used by web designers who want to get as much information across in a very limited space. Your web design company may ask you to choose one from the other depending on the needs of your client.

What is at stake for you and for your web design company when you choose between these two windows? Well, the method you choose has a large bearing not only on the final site design and aesthetics, but will also affect the ability of your online visitors to scan through the contents of your site. Furthermore, the layout can affect the ease, by which readers will find what they are looking for in the page, and can also reinforce or ruin your marketing efforts in the website. Thus, your web design company may stress the importance of choosing the right one depending on the message that the client wants to communicate across.

The Web Design Benefits and the Drawbacks To help you and your web design company to decide on which to use, I will present the benefits and the drawbacks for each type of layout.

Fixed Width Layout

  • The web design Benefits
    • Allows you to come up with pages that look entirely identical no matter who is browsing and what type of browser is being used.
    • Elements such as images and graphics will not tend to overpower the text contents especially in smaller monitors.
    • No matter how wide the visitor’s browser is, the scan length will not be affected when there are large segments of text.
  • The web design Drawbacks
    • They will cause horizontal scrolling in small browser windows. Users generally dislike having to scroll horizontally.
    • Fixed width layouts usually result to large coverage of whitespace in large monitors such that there is a waste of unused space, and further vertical scrolling may be needed than necessary.
    • This layout can not deal with font size changes quite well. A small increase in the font may be tolerated, but larger increases can not be handled well that your overall layout may become compromised.

    Liquid Width Layouts

    The Web Design Benefits

    • This layout can contract and expand to fill in all available space on the page.
    • All available space is used up, thereby allowing you to display as much content as you need to in larger monitors, yet still remain viewable on smaller ones.
    • This layout can provide you consistency in relative widths, therefore allowing your page to respond dynamically to restrictions and specifications that may be imposed by your client, such as larger font sizes.
  • The Web Design Drawbacks
    • Liquid layouts do not offer precise control over the page width and the elements on the page.
    • This layout may result to columns in the text which are either too wide for comfortable scanning, or too small for the text to show up very clearly.
    • Liquid layouts tend to have problems when dealing with elements in the page which has fixed width (i.e. image and graphics). If the column does not have enough space, some browsers may increase the column width, and all other elements in your page may not be in the proper order.

Many designers usually go for the mixed approach. You web design company may also suggest you to use both layouts depending on the page and the part of the site you are making. You can, for example, set your main columns to fixed width but make your side columns, headers and footers more flexible. With time and experience, you will eventually learn how to make the most out of the features of each layout type to come up with an optimized site.

SEO Client Retention - The Key to Long-Term SEO-M Business Success

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

Building a successful on-line business is hard. There’s a lot of competition and a lot of snake oil, SEO voodoo floating around the web, so building a solid reputation - one that leads to referrals and repeat business is essential to long-term business growth.

Once you have a client, you have to keep that client coming back because of the quality services and opinions you offer. You have to build a client base of happy clients. They come back for more. They’re also your best salespeople.

Here are some suggestions for keeping the customer satisfied.

    1. Go through an extensive discovery phase. Determine such things as the target demographic, market competition, unique selling position, client objectives, challenges - a top-down analysis of what needs doing. A few hours more at this stage will save days of re-dos in the weeks ahead.

    2. Prepare a written SOW. A statement of work describes the work to be undertaken (usually in chronological order), approval milestones, payment schedule, who’s going to do what. The more complete the SOW the more accurate the client’s expectations. Clients hate surprises so get on the same page early.

    3. Give a stake to the client. No client is going to quibble with a strategy or design that s/he proposed. Instead of presenting finished pages and data analysis, engage the client and incorporate his or her suggestions into the final product. As best you can, let the client “own” the project.

    4. Go proactive. In everything. Offer suggestions and counsel beyond the expectations of the client. If you discover an error you’ve made, call the client to let her know you’re on top of it.

    5. Communicate. A lot. Not just approvals, though they’re essential to increased productivity, but also discuss implementation strategies, guerilla marketing tactics and opportunities for future growth of the client’s business.

    6. Fix it. If the client ain’t happy, fix it. Period. A happy client will talk you up through his network. An unhappy client will bad mouth you to anyone who will listen. Rely on your SOW only as a last resort. Keep the client happy - even if it’s a loss leader for you.

Growing a stable of regular clients takes time and trust building. It’s an on-going process. But once your regulars are making up 75% of your work time, you don’t have to constantly worry about where the next job is coming from.

Google Penalizes These Mistakes! Avoid Them!

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

I have received questions on my previous few posts. Maybe it would be better if the myths and do-nots of traffic generation can be clarified. Firstly, every AdSense publisher aims to create traffic to their website, some faster than the others, some more successful while others are not so. However, results are usually reaped when you think long-termed and choose proven, white-hat methods to create traffic Publishers who choose to create inorganic traffic usually do not succeed, and the sad truth is that Google penalizes these publishers.

Listed below are some mistakes that new AdSense publishers usually commit. More often than not, these mistakes have severe repercussions on their listings in Google search engine. Bear these in mind while creating traffic.

    -Buying Traffic

Do not fall into advertising gimmicks claiming to drive hoards of traffic into your site. In common sense, these traffic are usually driven by other factors and the traffic generated is usually of poor quality. In the previous article, it is mentioned the best way to create a higher CTR (Click-Through-Rate) is by driving natural and targeted traffic to your AdSense website. So what constitutes to buying traffic? It can range from paying another publisher to put a link from their site to your site. Problem is that these links may be placed on another website with no link to the niche of your website, and the low quality traffic driven to your site will usually result in low CTR. Furthermore as advised by Google, links that create brides between two sites are more preferred, hence it may be better to save the money purchasing paid links.

What is “Link Bait and How Do I Create It?”

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

This is a cool term that I picked up in an intense Webmaster’s forum. I fancy myself a reasonably talented SEO marketer. I’ve never used Google Adwords or any other PPC advertising and I’m well-schooled on traditional as well as Web 2.0 search engine optimization strategies.

I can definitely say that Web 2.0 methods are a lot easier and a lot more fun than the tedious traditional methods.

What is the #1 thing that you need to get higher rankings in the search engines?

    Backlinks to your site.

The more links to your site, the better your rankings, in a nutshell. There are of course other factors such as the linking site’s pagerank, whether or not it’s a reciprocal link, and the anchor text used–just to name a few of the biggies.

So what exactly is this “link bait” and how do you make it?

Link bait is the kind of content that makes people want to link to it naturally. No link trading, nothing in return. Just content so good that people just want to be connected with it somehow.

So how do you create this kind of content that we call link bait? Well, you can give them what they were looking for such as news and solid information. If you become known as a reliable source of information, people will link to you whether they use your articles, link to you from their blogs, or bookmark you in the social bookmarking sites for example.

Another way to create link bait is to stir your reader’s emotion. Make them laugh, make them angry, scare them. Post the kind of content that makes people say: “Did you read so and so’s article? I can’t believe she said THAT!”

Create a controversy, if you can back up what you’re saying on the matter. Go against the grain. It’s ok to have your own opinions. As long as they’re well-founded, you should tell the world about them.

That is what the “new web” is all about.

Now go start a commotion or share your wealth of knowledge and create some instant link bait.

Do Directories Really Help With SEO?

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

Ask an SEO “expert” about submitting to web directories and most will say that it’s a great idea. It has long been an easy method of building stable and managable backlinks to your website of choice. Social Marketing has taken away a lot of the web directory’s steam, but there are still hundreds of directories out there receiving submissions every day.

Google has historically recommended that webmasters be listed in high quality directories as a way to improve organic search traffic. In fact, Google’s own web directory is pulled straight from the DMOZ.org directory. It has just been the rule, get listed in DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory, and you’re set. While I agree that these two directories are highly respected, I have begun to question their true value.

Take DMOZ, for example. It has gotten to the point where it is nearly impossible to have your site accepted into the directory without knowing (or bribing) the editor for that directory. Many webmasters submit their site and wait months without any response. Admission into the DMOZ directory no longer means that you have one of the best sites on the web…it means you got lucky.

Google seems to be starting to think this way as well. In it’s webmaster guidelines, the search giant recently removed a suggestion that webmaster submit their sites to DMOZ and Yahoo. Does this signify the beginning of the end for web directories? Not quite. Google says it will still recognize links in respected, relevant directories. Listing your website in a hundred small, general web directories will no longer do very much for your site. You will benefit more from a focus on niche directories and the highly respected directories like DMOZ. Also, getting links from .ORG website and .EDU websites seems to be gaining favor with Google and other search engines.

While directory submission doesn’t appear that it will do anything to hurt your website, it will likely not provide the same ranking boost as it has in the past. It is still worth your time to submit to the top directories, but also focus your efforts on well respected niche directories that are related to your website. These links should continue to provide benefits for your website well into the future.

    Perfecting SEO and Web Design

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

SEO and web design are very important aspects if you have a website or you want to create one. Search engine optimization is to try and get your site to a top ranking in the search engines, this is important as there are many other websites that are probably promoting the same thing you are and web design is important as you have to be better than the others. Your competitors will try everything to make their site better than yours, but you have to try harder than them. Without stealing their ideas, visit their sites to see what they have and do better. You could also get a UK SEO blog where you could have a brief review of your products and tell people where they can find them.

Your web design of your website must be excellent, make sure your design relates to your products, for example, if you are promoting baby items or kids toys, don’t make it too professional, but professional enough to make business. With a site like this you should have some color too. With whatever you are selling, you should have pictures so that your customers can see what the product looks like before they buy it.

Also, make sure that your site is easy to navigate, if it is difficult and people have to sit there for ages trying to figure it out, they are most likely not going to visit the website again. The pages should also have a quick loading time and anything on your site that can be downloaded, should be done at a fast speed. If your site is fast, easy and professional you will have a lot of interested customers and your site is likely to do well in the search engine optimization.

How to Convert Visitors to Buyers (Making You Money!)

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

Because of my experience in marketing and the fact I’ve spent almost 20 years helping people ‘get more business’, I’m constantly getting asked to “look at my website and tell me what you think? I’ve just spent $xxxx on it, doesn’t it look great!”.

But sadly ‘looking great’ doesn’t cut it. The primary objective of good website design for the vast majority of products and services is to ACHIEVE MORE SALES. Let me say that again, it’s not about how great your site looks, or even how many visitors you get to your site, what really matters is HOW MANY BUY? How many part with their own hard earned money to purchase the product or service you’re marketing because they can see the value in what it is you’re offering.

So the real judge on how good a website is, is in my view on how many sales it achieves relevant to the amount of visitors it gets. 1,000 people visiting your website but with only 3 buying suggests (strongly)that you need to seriously look at your website design. 300 visitors with 20 buying means you’re getting your website design much closer to being right.

==> Thought 1. Think like your visitors. It’s often too easy to write copy; design headlines; use colours and images all because you think that’s what your potential customer will want to read/see. Try and look at it differently - if you were the visitor to your site don’t think ‘what would I want to read/see’ but think more ‘what would I need to read/see to encourage me to buy!’. I appreciate it’s a subtle difference but it’s a very key difference in perspective and it will make the world of difference to your website conversions.

==> Thought 2. Always come from the premis that you can always get ‘more business’ from your website by being prepared to constantly tune key elements - there is no such thing as a completed website. Every website, no matter how good it is at converting visitors to sales, can still be improved to increase sales. With each website you design, set aside a little time each week to review, amend, test, review again, amend and test again. An extra 0.5% increase here and there can have a profound impact on your bank balance.

==> Thought 3. Study your competitors and think “how can I build a better mousetrap?”.

If you are marketing products or services in which you have competitors doing something similar, look at what they’re doing to identify what they’re doing right AND what they’re doing wrong! - both from which you can learn. One of the best ways I’ve found to identify what’s ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ about a competitors site is to ask a couple of friends or colleagues to act as ‘mystery shoppers’ and review the competitor’s website as if they were buying from it. Ask them to note down what they like and don’t like about it; ask them to jot down what would have encouraged them to buy and what put them off. Because your ‘mystery shoppers’ (friends) are not so close to internet marketing as you, allows the feed back to be much more relevant.

Learning from what your competitors are doing right, look at those elements to see if you can improve on those things …and for the things they’re clearly doing wrong, make sure you avoid those things. There is one exception to this - the elements that you feel are ‘wrong’ on competitor’s sites might only be wrong because of something small or subtle, and with some tuning on your part, it could be that you could turn that element to a positive that you could then add to your site …and in turn you are ‘building a better mousetrap’.

These were 3 quick thoughts I thought I’d share with you to help you get focused on creating website design that SELLS products and services …and doesn’t just ‘look good’.

First Time Buyers - Prescott, AZ

Posted by: adswithinreach  :  Category: Uncategorized

The first time you purchase a home there is a feeling unlike anything you have ever experienced. There is a joy that can only be explained by people who have experienced the sensation for themselves. However, this is a purchase that must be carefully planned at every step as buying for the first time can bring some unexpected turns. Getting yourself ready to purchase a home requires much more than simply finding the home you like and making an offer. Buying a home is a complex series of events that has to unfold in a precise manner, so the first step anyone should take is to find out about their credit. Your credit has a lot to do with a home purchase as most people cannot afford to simply write a cheque for the total amount of a home, a mortgage will be required; and that required good credit.

Getting a grip on your finances is a good thing to do at any time regardless of home purchases. Find out what your credit rating is and if there are any items that may be causing damage to it. The better your credit rating is, the better your chances of getting an agreeable mortgage. When you start looking for mortgages be sure to acquire what is known as a full pre-approval. This will pre-qualify you for a certain amount which is handy when you start shopping for homes. Once you have your financing arranged you can start shopping for homes that are within the price range that your mortgage pre-approval has defined.

The next part of the process is definitely the most fun. Try to think about home shopping logically. What are your plans for the future? Is there a family in the works? Kids? Pets? You will need to know these things in order to be able to find a home that suits your needs. In buying a home, forward planning is a must. It can be aggravating if your needs and family outgrow the home you have purchased after only a few years. As you move through this process, remember that if you find a home that fits your needs that you will have to make an offer that is attractive to the sellers, especially if there is more than one party interested in the home. Talk to your realtor about how to ensure that your offer is the one that catches the seller’s eye.
